Smell Disorders

There are approximately 4 million people nationwide (80,000 of them in the Chicago area) who suffer from anosmia (inability to smell) or hyposmia (reduced ability to smell).

There are a number of possible causes for these disorders. The most common is posttraumatic, an accident or blow to the head. Others are upper respiratory infections, allergies and nasal polyps. Less common causes include thyroid abnormalities, vitamin deficiencies and exposure to strong chemicals.

The loss of smell is often a diagnosis that is ignored in the healthcare field, however, its deficiency can have lasting effects on the patient from an emotional, physical and psychological perspective.

At the Smell & Taste Treatment and Research Foundation, evaluation of the patient begins with a comprehensive history and physical examination. Additional olfactory and gustatory quantitative measurable data may also be obtained to   establish a diagnosis, prognosis, and begin treatment.

Some patients with smell loss are easily helped by vitamin replacement, removal of polyps, or steroid treatment. Zinc, antidepressants and medication designed to enhance neurotransmitter levels also are utilized to treat these conditions.

Patients have been referred to our Foundation by physicians and attorneys from all over the world. Since we see a large population of patients with smell and taste disorders, we are very much aware of the anxiety they experience in wanting to have their smell and taste restored.
